Director's Statement
Echoes of Memories was developed during an intensive short filmmaking course, marking my very first attempt at screenwriting. Initially, I had no interest in writing and tried forcing myself to craft a high-concept thriller, the genre I most enjoyed watching. However, as the deadline approached and inspiration didn’t come, I realised I was far more drawn to character-driven drama, human connection, and complex family relationships than genre tropes. That breakthrough allowed me to pivot from plot mechanics to deep emotional truth, unlocking the story I actually wanted to tell.
The narrative grew out of a deeply personal place: my bond with my younger sister and the fear of what life would look like without her. While Alba and Clara find themselves in an extraordinary circumstance, the emotional core of the film is rooted in real grief, a deep sibling bond, and the terrifying prospect of loss. Exploring these themes forced me to be honest with myself as a storyteller, shifting my creative focus toward vulnerable, performance-led narratives.
Despite the tight turnaround, a minimal budget, and a skeletal crew of just six people, producing, directing and editing Echoes of Memories proved to be a foundational milestone. Navigating those resource constraints forced me to refine my approach to running a set, establishing the core principles I carry with me today: building trust and open collaboration with heads of department, creating a safe space for actors, and prioritising emotional authenticity above everything else.
